Collagen Induction Therapy, also known as Microneedling, Dermarolling, Dermapen or skin needling, is a medical treatment that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles.  Microneedling is minimally invasive and safe for all skin tones. It works by stimulating your body to make collagen.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to make more collagen. The pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue.

This new skin tissue is more even in tone and texture. It’s common for the skin to lose collagen with age or injury. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, additional collagen may help make the skin firmer.

What's the benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling is a targeted procedure which reduces skin problems like acne, blemishes, scars, marks, age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and large pores. It is advised that you do not microneedle if you are having an active acne problem as it might lead to irritation and peeling. Microneedling when pregnant, or while having skin infections, can cause problems as well. In addition to reducing the facial skin problems, microneedling can also be an effective procedure for reducing stretch marks.

Preparing for microneedling

Before the procedure, consider talking with the aesthetician about ways to prepare for your appointment. You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as ibuprofen and those for acne treatment (like Accutane), well in advance of the procedure.

It’s also recommended that you avoid using agents that may increase the sensitivity of your skin.  It is recommend that you stop using topical retinoids and exfoliants before your microneedling appointment.

How to look after the skin following a microneedling procedure

Just like with any cosmetic skin treatment, such as Botox or microdermabrasion, it’s important to look after your skin following a microneedling procedure. Some things you want to keep in mind, include:

  • Dryness, scaling, redness and swelling may be seen after treatment, lasting for several days or longer, depending on the depth of penetration of the needles. Recovery is minimal, though people with sensitive skin should be careful when applying moisturisers and serums. After the treatment, the skin can be inflamed and more sensitive than usual.

  • Sun protection for several weeks after the treatment is recommended.

  • In case of acne scars, your face should be cleaned with a gentle cleanser following the cosmetic procedure.

  • Rejuvenation of skin may be seen as soon as 2 weeks and as long as 6-8 months after microneedling

  • Burn scars may take a little slower to respond and it may be 6 months - 1 year before you see the final results.

How long does microneedling last?

Results may vary based on the severity of the skin concern, its location, and the treatment plan used.

Four to six treatment sessions is recommended with 4 to 6 weeks interval. The skin may continue increased collagen production for 3 to 6 months after microneedling treatment.
